The wooden plate used is a Ema plate for February celebration.

Gion Nanba is located in the heart of Geisha town of Gion, just a stone’s throw away from Yasaka Shrine, Kyoto. Yet, it’s hard to find if you don’t know exactly where it’s at.

It is meant to be hidden – a Gion’s tradition to treasure private time and space, escaping from the prominent amusement world.

Slipping off from the busy Shijo street into a narrow alley – like Alice in Wonderland - you will find a small light that only says its name. It didn’t take long, however, for a Michelin critique to find this new, secretive restaurant and gave a star. It offers an exquisite traditional Kaiseki multi-course dinner and lunch in a very private atmosphere in an unique Kyoto-Gion style.

At Gion-Nanba, only the freshest and the highest quality seasonal ingredients, critically chosen by the owner chef, Nanba, are allowed to be served on the table. He then takes them to the exceptional stage.

Hamo (white fish), baby radish and wakame soup

The authenticity you feel and taste is the true tradition of Kyo-Kaiseki. Never over-sauced and over-power the essence of ingredients, rather, try educing the most out of what they have in Umami.

Whether you want to make a special memory in Kyoto, or want to invite special guests, this is an ideal place. Choose a different seating for your occasion. Believe me, it’s hard to find a Kaiseki restaurant opens until this late (last order 10 pm) around Kyoto.

You can experience this sophisticated Kaiseki taste in this special atmosphere at this reasonable price range at Gion Nanba. It’s more than worth a try while you are in the town of Gion, Kyoto. (by the webmaster)
